While planning out your organization’s upcoming fundraising campaigns, major events, and communications outreach, it’s important to keep some key dates in mind.
Depending on your audience, mission, and goals, there are a few days – like major holidays – you may want to avoid altogether. On the other hand, recognizing certain holidays or awareness days could extend your reach and improve engagement.
Here, we share a list of nonprofit dates in 2026 that every organization should save on their nonprofit calendar. Plus, find a few tips and tricks to engage your audience throughout the year!

2026 U.S. Federal Holidays
The first dates we recommend saving when a new year rolls around? Major holidays!
These holidays are officially recognized by the U.S. government, meaning that most government employees will have the day off. Many other companies are closed for these days as well!
Here are the 11 U.S. federal holidays coming up in 2026:
- New Year’s Day – Thursday, January 1
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 19
- Washington’s Birthday (also known as Presidents’ Day) – Monday, February 16
- Memorial Day – Monday, May 25
- Juneteenth National Independence Day – Friday, June 19
- Independence Day – Saturday, July 4 (observed on Friday, July 3 this year)
- Labor Day – Monday, September 7
- Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day – Monday, October 12
- Veterans Day – Wednesday, November 11
- Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 26
- Christmas Day – Friday, December 25
It’s typically a good idea to avoid scheduling big events or appeals directly on these days. Unless, of course, your mission directly aligns with that holiday! For example, organizations serving veterans could benefit from a celebration or fundraiser held on Veterans Day.
If the holiday is one your audience celebrates, sending a celebratory email or posting on social media could boost your engagement.
More Holidays for Your Nonprofit Calendar
Next up, let’s take note of other holidays that will be celebrated by many people in the U.S. in 2026.
Not everyone will have the day off on these days. But, you’ll still want to be aware of religious gatherings or family celebrations that could be taking place before you set the date for your next gala or trivia night.
Tip from the Playbook: If your mission aligns with a holiday in this list, celebrating it could help you stand out from the crowd. Check out our seasonal fundraiser blogs for several creative ideas you can steal during winter, spring, summer, or fall.

You’ll also want to include giving days or community events specific to your city or state. In short, if you want to remember it or promote it, put it on the calendar!
